Frequently Asked Questions

What is the length of each session?

Each session lasts 50 minutes; the "therapeutic hour", which allows time for reflection and note taking if needed, after the client/patient has left.

What happens if I am unable to attend a session?

If you are unable to attend a session for whatever reason, I will endeavour to offer you another session in the same week. However, this is subject to availability, otherwise I charge for missed sessions.

How many sessions of counselling/psychotherapy will I need?

This depends entirely on the individual, some clients/patients may feel ready to end their sessions after a few weeks, some may need months. We will continually review how the sessions are going during therapy. It is beneficial to allow a number of sessions to bring the process to an end and with long - term therapy it is advisable to allow longer.

How frequent are the sessions?

The sessions are once or twice a week at the same time and on the same day.

How will I feel during therapy?

It may be difficult at first to share intimate, private information with someone you don't know, but hopefully it will be a relief to be able to talk and share your thoughts with someone who will listen, will not judge you and will respect your feelings.

Is counselling/psychotherapy confidential?

Counselling and psychotherapy is confidential. However, regardless of experience, supervision is required in order to help and protect both parties by ensuring that counsellors and psychotherapists are working in their client's best interests. Confidentiality is observed at all times.

In very rare cases, I may have to breach confidentiality; for instance if I believe the client/patient is considered to be a risk to themselves or to others. If I make this decision I will make all efforts to discuss this with the client/patient. This situation is however a very rare occurrence.
